The Mission: Problem & Challenges

In the high-stakes world of high-end automotive parts, our client – a substantial retailer representing over 50 prestige brands and pulling in more than $200k per month – found themselves in a rough patch

Despite an impressive roster of 28k email subscribers, they were stuck in the mud with an email marketing strategy that felt as worn out as a set of tires after a 1000-mile road trip.

Hitting the Skids: An Ill-Fitting Strategy and Tired Tactics. For starters, they had six email flows that had been set up by another agency. That might sound impressive, but here's the kicker: these flows were about as effective as a petrol car running on hydrogen.

The messages were more templatized than a generic birthday card from the drugstore and resonated with the target audience about as well as heavy metal music at a meditation retreat.

Warning Lights: The Perils of a Cookie-Cutter Approach. These cookie-cutter messages weren't fooling anyone, and the subscriber base could sniff out a canned email quicker than a mechanic spotting a leaky gasket.

Unfortunately, they didn't have an in-house email guru who could fine-tune these campaigns, so they were stuck driving a clunker.

Threading the Needle: The High-Wire Act of High-End Retail. The nail in the tire? Their business model. As a retailer, the margins were thinner than a wisp of exhaust smoke.

And their clientele? Eyes perpetually peeled for the best deals. The challenge was not just to stand out but to do so without resorting to predictable tactics like coupons and discounts. After all, their customers were sophisticated, discerning individuals who wanted more than just a sweet deal.

At a Standstill: A High-Octane Product Meets Low-Impact Strategy. In short, they were stuck in neutral. Despite having a solid site and brand, and a customer list that would make competitors drool, they couldn't gain traction.

They needed more than a tune-up; they needed a pit crew ready to overhaul their entire email marketing strategy. They needed someone who could go full throttle on their email game.

And that's when they turned to us.

The Mission: Objectives And Goals

In the grand tradition of finding ourselves at a crossroads, we teamed up with our client to formulate a clear roadmap. A "Sat-Nav" of objectives, if you will, that would help us drive their email marketing into overdrive. Together, we set out to achieve the following:

1. Turbocharge Automated Email Revenue: The first goal on our list was to fine-tune those sputtering email flows and turn them into sleek revenue-generating machines.

Our client had six flows that were idling away – they were all show and no go. We knew that with a little tweaking under the hood, these flows could be firing on all cylinders, and contributing a significant chunk to the client's monthly revenue.

2. Boost Profit Margins Without Relying on Discounts: If there's one thing that stings more than a grease burn in the auto parts industry, it's slimmer margins.

We wanted to give our client the ability to improve their margins without having to resort to the easy way out: discounts.

Our aim was to prove that by delivering value, authenticity, and by addressing the customers' interests directly, we could encourage customer loyalty and maintain healthy profit margins without a "Sale!" sign in sight.

3. Rise Above the Competition: Lastly, we set our sights on the crowded automotive parts market. Our client didn't just want to exist; they wanted to stand out, to be the retailer that everyone talked about at car shows and online forums.

The challenge was to deliver an email marketing program that, like a custom-made spoiler, gave them that distinctive edge in the industry.

In the world of automotive parts, where performance is king, we were ready to show that the right approach to email marketing could be the nitrous boost our client needed to rocket to the front of the pack.

Strategy & Tactics: The R.A.E. Methodology

When it comes to revamping an email marketing campaign, it's not about guessing and checking.

It's about methodical strategy and precision, the kind of approach that would make a Bugatti car engineer proud.

For our client, we didn't deviate from our tried-and-true course. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work with our time-tested RAE (Revenue Amplification Engine) methodology.

RAE is to email marketing what a turbocharger is to an engine. It focused on the "Hidden Journey" and turns every site visitor, every email, and every subscriber into a high-octane revenue generator.

RAE

Our RAE approach is a four-stage race that doesn’t just aim to cross the finish line, but does so leaving others in a cloud of dust:

The 4 Stages Of A Revenue Amplification Engine

Stage 1: Amplifying the Value of Each Site Visitor

Stage 2: Amplifying the Revenue of Each Email Sent

Stage 3: Amplifying the Revenue of Each New Subscriber

Stage 4: Amplifying the Revenue of Each New Buyer

(Keen to know more about our methodology? Take a deep dive here)

At the end of the day, the goal wasn't just to rev up the client's email marketing.

It was to take it to a whole new level of performance, just like a finely tuned car.

Buckle up, folks, it's about to get fast and furious.

The Implementation: What We Did

Here’s how we brought our RAE methodology to life and revved up the email marketing game for our high-end automotive client:

Stage 1: Amplifying The Value Of Each Site Visitor

Goal: Capture the attention of high-value potential subscribers.

In Stage 1 we want to turn casual site visitors into high-value subscribers. Think of it as turning a Sunday driver into a Formula 1 racer. We achieved this by:

  • Testing multiple popup creatives until we hit upon the one that had visitors signing up faster than a hot rod at a green light.
  • Experimenting with various offers to find the sweet spot that combined irresistible conversion rates with bumper-to-bumper profits.

Stage 2: Amplifying The Revenue Of Each Email Sent

Goal: Ensure our emails effectively encourage potential customers to make a purchase.

Cue the Abe Lincoln quote: “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

We embraced this philosophy to maximize the impact of our emails. Our goals were to:

  • Dig into market research to understand our audience's motivations, fears, and needs as intimately as a mechanic knows an engine.
  • Decide on the right approach, balancing direct response with branding, and the right type of emails (we went with hybrid ones), a perfect blend of compelling copywriting and multi-brand retail relevance.
  • Set up 3 to 4 A/B tests on all the emails going into the flows to unearth the champion performer. (Spoiler alert: We discovered an email variant that outperformed the rest by a whopping 5 times!)
  • Experiment with different offers within the flows to keep margins healthy and uncover the offer types that resonated most with the audience.
  • Ensure our client's Klaviyo account had prime deliverability, making sure every email sent ended up in the right inboxes, not lurking in a spam folder.

Stage 3: Amplifying The Revenue Of Each New Subscriber

Goal: Convert as many new email subscribers into buyers as possible.

How did we do it? Through a series of well-crafted flows:

  • We established a Welcome Flow that was so unique, it made our client’s brand stand out like a Lambo in a parking lot full of Corollas.
  • We created a Checkout Abandonment Flow that tapped into the deep-seated motivations and desires of the audience while anticipating potential objections at this crucial stage.
  • We developed a Browse Abandonment Flow segmented for the top brands our client sells. This ensured higher relevance and conversion rates.
  • We launched a Cart Abandonment Flow that nudged customers to complete their orders.
  • Finally, we rolled out a Site Abandonment Flow that kept the interest in the brand sky-high and smoothly moved people down the sales funnel.

Stage 4: Amplifying The Revenue Of Each New Buyer

Goal: Increase the lifetime value of each new buyer.

The ultimate goal of this stage is to rev up the lifetime value of each new buyer.

At the time of writing this, we're in the thick of implementing this stage. Just like tuning a car for optimal performance, we’re ensuring every strategy, every tactic, every fine-tuning is directed towards increasing the ROI from each new buyer.

This is a journey, but one we're taking with our eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, ready to navigate any twists and turns.

Now, are you ready to see what kind of power we've been able to unleash?

Quantitative Results: "Show Me The Money"

When it comes to the nitty-gritty of our efforts, we rolled up our sleeves, revved the engine, and followed the trusted roadmap of our Revenue Amplification Engine (RAE). The results?

Turbocharged results that left even us in awe.

Vroom-vroom, ROI!

Within the first month of implementation, our project had a staggering 27x ROI.

This ain't your grandpa's old jalopy; this baby's just warming up and the RPMs (Returns Per Marketing dollar spent) are only going to rev higher as time passes and these automated emails continue to do their job.

High-octane Sales

New email flows aren't just fancy bells and whistles; they're the fuel-injected powertrain of your marketing machine.

In the first month alone, these email flows drove home $89,000 in sales. That's not just hitting the gas; that's punching it.

A/B Test: A Turbocharged Checkout Abandonment Email

One of the new Checkout Abandonment email we put in the driver's seat revved up 4.5x more sales than the previous one. Talk about a well-tuned machine.

Higher RPMs (Revenue Per Mail)

We cranked the revenue per subscriber dial from a steady cruise of $10.55 to a heart-racing $19.64, a whopping 1.8x increase.

More Torque from Emails

We increased the attributed sales from emails from 26.3% to a hefty 33.2% within the first 30 days. More torque means more pull, and in this case, more pull towards purchases.

Revving up Margins

Lastly, we've managed to tread lightly on discounts without spinning out on conversion rates. We’re running leaner, meaner, and still pulling ahead.

So there you have it, folks. Those are some tire-shredding, gear-shifting, RPM-boosting numbers to get your heart racing.

CS-AUT-5 s

You're seeing a 66% increase in email revenue after replacing the core flows.

Even though we hadn’t sent any campaign yet, which is going to drive this even higher.

CS-AUT-1 s

During the flows implementation, we created 3 versions for each email and tested it against the one the brand was running. In one test, the winner got as much as five time more sales (Version C with ~$11k vs $2.1k).

CS-AUT-6 s

We ran this pop-up A/B test to preliminary test our new creative vs. the one they were already running.

Our subscription rate was 2.4 times higher.

CS-AUT-4 s

You're seeing the sales for the new Welcome Email.

We reduced the discount yet kept the conversion rate the same by making a better email with better and more compelling copywriting.

CS-AUT-2 s2

You're seeing an A/B test inside the new Checkout Abandonment Flow.

Our new email (to the right) gets 23% more sales with a 36% higher AOV.

Most importantly, it leads to more profit because we didn't rely on discounts to get the sale.

Lessons Learned

Like an expert driver navigating a challenging course, we came away from this project with some key insights tucked under our belt. Our experiences here will fuel our future strategies and help us keep pushing the pedal to the metal.

Design vs. Text-Based Emails: Our initial expectations about the best type of emails for this audience was a bit of a coin toss. Past data from similar clients had left us straddling a divide – some pointed towards design-based emails, others towards text-based.

Well, after running this race, we found that our audience had a preference for the text-based approach. But, because we never settle for less than turbocharged results, we transitioned to hybrid emails in some flows to give our client the best of both worlds.

The Uniqueness Quandary: In the world of multi-brand retailing, standing out can be a bit like trying to be heard over the roar of a crowded racetrack.

It's crucial to answer the #1 question lingering in customers' minds – "Why should I buy from you?" For our client, we tackled this challenge head-on and answered this question in multiple ways and various places throughout our email flows.

In the end, we learned that every client, much like every car, is unique and requires its own fine-tuning and adjustments. Whether it's understanding the nuances of different audiences or underlining the uniqueness of a multi-brand retailer, our e-commerce specialization comes into play, allowing us to make precise turns on the vast and varied e-commerce track.

As we look towards the horizon, we are excited to apply these learnings to the races that lie ahead.

What's next, you ask?

Oh, just you wait and see…

Future Plans

If there's one thing we've learned from the high-speed world of motorsports, it's this: there's always another race to run, another finish line to cross. For us, that next race is already in the works.

As we draft this, we're working on the development of the next batch of Stage 4 automations. Our aim? To keep our audience engaged and rev up their willingness to make a return trip to the brand by implementing emails that not only captivate but also build brand loyalty.

Because here's the thing: we're not in this for the quick laps. We're in it for the long haul, the grand tour. We're not just looking to get your audience to buy from you; we're working to turn them into die-hard fans, ardent supporters who will choose your brand time and again.

And as we look down this exciting stretch of road, we can't wait to see where this journey takes us and our client.

After all, the race is on, and the best is yet to come.
